green smoothies

What do you think about adding other things to the green smoothie?  For example, I’ve been adding “Delicious Greens 8000″ (a spoonful), some whey protein, and some non-fat plain kefir.  I’d be interested to hear if you think this is either beneficial or detrimental to the whole green smoothie concept.

Also, what do you think about the idea of doing a green smoothie “fast” for a few days or more?  Would you consider this to be harmful or beneficial?

Thanks.

My question is – how are your readers posting to your blog? When we sign up for the 12 Steps blog, do we actually have access to both, and some people inadvertently post to this one instead of the 12 Steps one?

I do a green smoothie fast, myself, often, for a few days. It’s a great idea. In my new book, I outline a 3-day detox, a 30-day cleanse, and of course the lifestyle change of eating whole foods and a quart daily for life.

Adding dehydrated greens, to me, is a better idea in water at OTHER times during the day added to water. Your body has plenty of alkaline, raw, enzyme-rich nutrition with the greens and fruit, at the time you drink the smoothie.

Off topic, Katie, you register for both blogs separately. As for whether sometimes people post here on 12 Steps’ blog when they should be on the other one, I don’t know. I just try to keep up and fail spectacularly.

    :-)

  3. As a raw food vegan, I do not like the idea of consuming any dairy-related products. I do think that adding ground flax is a great idea. And if you want to delight your small children, add enough flax to the glass of green smoothies so that it turns to “gloppy pond sludge!” (about 1/4 cup ground flax to 2 cups GS, set in fridge for a couple hours, viola!)

Two or three times a week, I add Vega’s Whole Food Smoothie Infusion. This is a vegan, alkaline, protein, fiber, EFA-rich, green food developed by Brandan Brazier (vegan tri-athlete of Canada).

In addition, I agree that doing a green smoothie fast for a few days is an excellent idea. Intestines need the day(s) off every now and then too!

Thanks for the opportunity to share.

    Blessings.

Also a raw vegan, I wouldn’t add any dairy products, not even fermented.

I have been adding a spoonful of powdered maca, a spoonful of powdered comfrey root, and a half spoon of cinnamon. Great for maintaining good blood sugar levels.

Thanks for your comments about my question about adding kefir and green powder.

As an aside, I also add ginger to my GS sometimes and I like the spiciness that adds.

I personally don’t put dairy or green powders in my green smoothies. But there are so many variants amongst people’s constitutions, and someone’s nutritional needs today may be different tomorrow… Any way that works for someone to get the nutrients and balance they need sounds good to me. :)

I personally can’t stand flax, but I add hemp seeds all time! As well as goji berries, inca berries, raw chocolate, coconut oil, maca, carob (only with chocolate), chia seeds, pomegranate concentrate… Fresh nut or seed milks if I want something creamy.

I think simpler is generally better overall, but I love variety and trying all kinds of new & flavorful combos!

I just did a green smoothie fast last week although at the time I wasn’t thinking of it in those terms. I felt as though I was coming down with something, my stomach was feeling off and nothing other than green smoothies appealed to me so I went with it. I felt better within three days and never did get sick.

I never add dairy to my green smoothies. Usually just fruit and lots of greens and sometimes some fresh juice if it sounds good to me.

I put in raw spinach, chai tea, walnut oil (for essential fatty acids) and raw vegan rice protein powder with pineapple, raspberries and blueberries this morning. It’s almost too sweet for me. Maybe I should have skipped the pineapple.

Got something to say? Go for it!
