Help for Migraines

I need some feedback from those of you who have migraines and how green smoothies have helped you.  I have a 21-year old daughter who has migraines every month (definitely hormone related).  I have talked to her about green smoothies but she is not interested.  I don’t have much specific information on how smoothies help with migraines.  I would love some feedback so I can hopefully convince her to give this a try.  Thanks everyone!

    Robyn,
I am a junior in college, and in my biology class, we’ve been assigned groups for a research project on a topic of our choosing. I’d really like to do the project/presentation on nutrition, namely the optimal diet for human health. Another angle we discussed was simply whether or not humans were designed to eat animal flesh. I am excited about the project, and I think I’ve gotten my group on board, but we need to submit some resources to our professor to get the “OK”. I was wondering if you have any suggestions on where to look for research, or news articles relating to this topic. Thanks!

    Beth

Beth, I think it’s John McDougall who writes in detail about how the human gastrointestinal tract is far too long to be carnivorous, how animals designed to eat flesh have very short colons/intestines. Great topic, good luck! John Robbins’ The Food Revolution has tons of great statistics, well organized, from a variety of research sources. I bet you get some other suggestions from this group.

I get chronic migraines, which for me is partially genetic (my mom sufferers from them too). Sometimes they are triggered by foods, sometimes by stress, frequently by hormones, and sometimes by something I can’t identify. Chocolate, red wine, and aged cheese are common food triggers for migraine sufferers, including myself. Some, like red wine for me, are more predictable triggers. Hormones are my most reliable trigger.
I find that, generally speaking, the more whole foods, especially raw plants (green smoothies!) and the more consistent I am with exercise the fewer migraines I get. I want to be fair here, and say that at this point my migraines are not debilitating. Uncomfortable, yes, sometimes even quite disruptive, but I am almost always still able to function. However, one of my primary symptoms is nausea, which makes me want to eat nothing except perhaps a piece of bread or some crackers.
I’m certainly not perfect, and I do eat sometimes eat things that I know could trigger me. But by and large the better I eat, the more I avoid my triggers and processed foods in general, and the more consistently I exercise the better I feel. Green smoothies, are for me, one of the quickest and easiest ways to load up my diet with raw plants.

Here is a link to a blog post where Robyn talks about all of the health benefits her family has enjoyed from drinking green smoothies. Notice that migraine headaches going away are on that list!

What perfect timing for me to find your wonderful site and blog! I read Victoria Boutenko’s “Green For Life” a few months ago, after my 39 year old husband had a stroke, and it totally changed both of our lives, and so many people we come in contact with! I have been having hormonal migraines suddenly, only in the last few years. Since I have been a green smoothie girl, I have never had one again!! UNTIL….yesterday! But still, this one was so minor compared to what I was having, I truly feel that the green smoothies have provided the nutrition I was missing that led to migraines.

I have suffered from migraines for about 12 years. I have not had success with the medications suggested to treat migraines. Therefore, I have started a new diet that is supposed to eliminate migraine triggers, and hopefully the headaches. I am interested in trying green smoothies for the nutritional value, however, most of the suggested ingredients are commonly known migraine triggers, such as: papaya, pineapple, banana, all citrus, avocado, onion, the list goes on and on!. I would do a lot of research on ALL the ingredients in the smoothie before you suggest to your daughter to try it. I would be very interested in any suggestions as to what to try!

I’m 23 years old and I had headaches at least every other day for 6 years~
I got a cat scan and went to different MDs and they all said I had stress related headaches. I just started an anti-candida diet which includes about 3 green smoothies a day, along with eating no sugar and I after 10 days I didn’t have a headache again. I’m so excited that I don’t have to poison myself with Excedrin/tylenol/celebrex anymore. She should try it.

I had migraine for 10 years. Two children, husband and full time job. I had headache twice a week it was horrible. I couldn’t live without medication.Tried all natural things, herbs, acupuncture massages, diet. Doctors not helping in this case only can give you medication so you can use it all your life.
6 moths ago my coworker gave me book GREEN FOR LIFE (Victoria Boutenko). This book changed my life. I drink green smoothies every morning and don’t have headaches anymore. I am free of pain and can enjoy my life again.

Got something to say? Go for it!
