come on an amazing trip with us

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

My youngest 3 kids and I are going on a American History / LDS Church History trip July 10-24. It will be unforgettable and we can’t wait! I have wanted to take my kids on a trip like this for many years but planning it was daunting.

All the details are taken care of–you just come along and enjoy. In addition to all the historical sites, we’re seeing Wicked in New York, river rafting, and going to the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Hershey factory, Ground Zero, and Niagara Falls. And we have a free night that I’ll probably teach a GS show in NYC. (Or you can catch another Broadway play.)

Please come with us!

This trip will likely appeal only to my LDS readers; the tour guides are INCREDIBLE seminary teachers who are friends of mine; they told me a few GSG readers are already signed up. The itinerary is AMAZING. Check this out, and if you can’t come, send your child. Erica, Kristy, my kids and I will make sure they have a once-in-a-lifetime experience, great prep for D&C studies next year in Seminary!

Learning of America’s Forefathers in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial, discussing the Lord’s priesthood power on the banks of the Susquehanna River, reading the “voices from the dust” on the Hill Cumorah, and testifying of the Prophet Joseph at Carthage Jail. There is nothing quite like the “Spirit of Place” that we invite you to experience.

Come join us in July 2010 for an adventure in American and LDS Church History as we travel the path of those who have paved the way for our freedom and faith. You will understand for yourself what Elder M. Russell Ballard meant when he explained that a historic monument, done properly, can inspire visitors to “feel the fire of their predecessors in their bones.” With lessons taught from the scriptures at each site, your knowledge and testimony will increase and you will develop renewed appreciation for your own place in the Lord’s work.

Patriots & Pioneers is a perfect tour for the youth or the young at heart. Designed with teenage energy in mind, the trip is a fast-paced, fun-filled two week adventure! Everyone is welcome to come. (Past travelers have included participants from age 9 to 67!) Parents, families, teens, young adults – anyone may join us!

Space is limited and the tour is filling up fast! (Note: After May 22nd, the price will increase due to additional airline costs.)

how much does a green smoothie cost?

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Jumping the gun . . . drum roll please . . . I just might be opening the first-ever Green Smoothie Bar!

Yep, I have an interested party who already owns the perfect facility to try the concept out here in Utah County (then roll it out in other places if it finds traction). I’ve had SO many people tell me we should open a GreenSmoothieGirl shop. I don’t want to run it, but I want to have a place for people who want to skyrocket their consumption of fresh greens/fruit but don’t want to make GS themselves.

Here’s the OTHER cool announcement that isn’t in my book . . . or anywhere else . . .

In order to gather cost information, I purchased (from Costco and Good Earth) greens and fruit at retail prices, made a blenderful, and broke down the cost per ounce. I think you will be amazed at what I found:

A 96 oz. blenderful (in addition to water/ice):

Organic chard ($.66) 1/3 of a bunch

Organic kale ($1) 1/3 of a bunch

Spinach ($0.85) 22% of a 2.5-lb. bag

2 cups frozen mixed berries ($1.66)

2 oranges ($0.83)

2 bananas ($0.42)

2 Tbsp. raw/organic agave ($0.28)

= $5.70 for 72 oz.

That’s 7.9 cents per ounce.

A quart of green smoothie (my recommendation for adults) is then
$2.53

And to think that the biggest resistance I get from people is, “IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE!” How much is a Starbucks latte? Twice that much? How about a Power Bar? About that much. A Happy Meal? These are things people don’t think twice about spending money on.

For about $2.50 you can get 12-15 servings of RAW GREENS AND FRUIT in your diet. Amazing.

Would you spend $1.25 a day for your child to have a pint of green smoothie, 7 servings of raw greens and fruit? So her only serving of fruits or vegetables isn’t ketchup or French fries like most American kids? The ketchup and fries will cost you that much.

All the excuses just disappeared.

Friday class: thanks for coming!

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

My class at PowerTri in Lehi was attended by over 100 on Friday night (all but 4 were there from this blog).

Thanks Jamie and Ryan for hosting it!

I loved how well “date night” turned out, like it did the first time we did it a couple months ago at Beyond Sports in Lindon.

So many husbands came, I love it! It might help to get your S.O. in front of me if you don’t think s/he’ll read my books. If you bring yours, I’ll try to rub off a little of my enthusiasm on him/her! My goal is to nurture and inspire people towards better choices—not depress, guilt, or shame them.

Jackie and Jenni (support123 [at] greensmoothiegirl.com) have gotten a lot of queries about when my next class is from those who were there on Friday night and want to send a friend or loved one.

I don’t know, but I’ll post it here when I know. I hope to do my show at all the Good Earth stores soon. If you have attended a GSG class and would like to comment here about its value to you, please do so and I’ll point the Good Earth folks here.

I announced something REALLY REALLY COOL at that class, that I had just learned. I’ll tell you about it here on the blog tomorrow! Actually it’s one awesome announcement, and one announcement that is jumping the gun but I might just do it anyway because I’m so pumped.

A 6-year old in attendance said, “Mom, this smoothie is really good! Let’s make it when we get home!”

Thanks everyone for not only coming, but for telling and showing your friends about how eating whole foods can radically change their lives for the better.

A reader named Lena came up afterward and gave me this note:

“Didn’t the Lord call it the GARDEN of Eden rather than the ZOO of Eden?”

Eat plants!

Love y’all,
Robyn

double header Saturdays

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Today I did what I’ve come to think of as quintessentially SPRING for me, for the past 10 years: DOUBLE HEADERS! One of my favorite things in the world is 4 hours of baseball on a sunny day.

My 16 y.o. Cade said something slightly snippy to me the other day about all those green smoothies he drank in the dugout that made him look like a “tard” in front of his friends. (I used to make his friends GS when they came over, too.) I reminded him that if it weren’t for GS and good nutrition in general, he might not be throwing 80 mph and hitting a GRAND SLAM this last week against Timpview HS and hitting 6’2″ on his 16th birthday. (Lowest ERA, by far, of all the pitchers, the most triples of all the batters–okay, I’m done bragging now.)

After all, before I educated myself, he was on FIVE COURSES of liquid steroids before the age of 2. Read the intro of my book The Green Smoothies Diet: his pediatrician told me 5 courses “virtually guarantees stunted growth.” That’s when I “checked out” of the doctor’s office forever and took my family’s health into my own hands.

So it was Tennyson’s double header today. He’s 9. He hit several doubles as “cleanup batter” (strategically placed #4 in the lineup) and struck some guys out as pitcher. As 3rd baseman, ran to field a ball at the pitcher’s mound and tripped over the pitcher, but not before throwing the runner out at 1st.

Ah, so many memories of my boys drinking their pint of green smoothies in the dugout at Burgess Field in beautiful Alpine, Utah. I wish I had a camera, today, for the shot of Tennyson slurping his GS, next to a kid drinking a Gatorade, and two other kids on the other side who were munching on Cheetohs and drinking a soda. What a great photo that would be for the kids’ book on nutrition I’m going to write.

Ten said that the kids asked him for some of his green smoothie. I love it!

Who ever said that baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie are the ultimate Americana? I’m going to pick and choose in that lineup.

free movie: Food Inc. showing next Saturday

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

I mentioned seeing Food, Inc. (here on the blog) last year. Had to go to a seedy little theater an hour away to find it, as it was the only showing anywhere around here.

Because I’m steeped in this industry (counterculture, anti-S.A.D. nutrition) and have read widely on the subject, I didn’t see anything new in the film. For most of America, though, I believe it will be enlightening.

I was a bit disappointed. The film slams modern Goliath Monsanto (deservedly), modern agribusiness that has turned our food supply into a thousand permutations of corn and soy, and deplorable poultry/livestock practices. But then it doesn’t leave the viewer with anything uplifting to really DO about the problem.

However, it’s a good first step towards getting us away from accepting the offerings of fast food, refined food, and animal products in America.

I would absolutely recommend taking your child or teen for a primer on what has happened to food in America.

I was at The Good Earth today and a reader approached me about posting this on my blog:

You can see Food, Inc. for FREE on

May 15 (Sat.) from 1-4 p.m.
with a panel discussion with local chefs and area farmers afterward

Costco products to avoid

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

I was at Costco today and saw another product that is an egregious example of how savvy marketers are preying on those who have a small amount of nutrition information but don’t understand the big picture.

More and more companies are truly motivated to provide us with excellent nutrition. It’s exciting. We live in a time when we have more options to eat right than ever before.

Other companies, unfortunately, especially the biggest ones, are feeding the mass market garbage foods while finding ways to promote it as nutritious.

Post Cherry Almond Crunch Cereal is one such product.

The box says, “No high fructose corn syrup! Oat clusters, sun-ripened cherries, multi-grain flakes!”

Well, it has CORN SYRUP (also white sugar and brown sugar) even if it’s not HFCS. Unimpressive.

It’s full of refined oils. There might be “multi” grains (more than one, who cares!) but that doesn’t mean they’re whole foods. The cornmeal is “degermed,” which means the high-vitamin part is removed. It’s not hard to use regular cornmeal! The main ingredient in the cereal is white (refined) rice.

Sun ripened cherries. I am so rolling my eyes.

The only “whole” foods in the ingredient list are whole wheat and rolled oats, well down the list. (The first thing in any ingredient list is what there’s most of, and the last thing is what there’s least of.)

Don’t fall for it. Or the organic pop tarts on the same aisle.

I will be highly entertained if someone comes on this blog and defends Post. Jif did that, the HFCS industry did that, and Mercola did that, when I questioned their data and tactics. Well, bring it on.

another reason to eat plant foods

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Last night I went to dinner at a friend’s house. She is getting married this week and had a house packed full of her large family and his. So I was “helping” by making gravy. We put the boiling roast drippings in the BlendTec, I added cornstarch, pressed the lid on, and pushed the button . . .

Suddenly the scalding hot contents were flying out all over the kitchen, drenching both my arms. I was wearing long sleeves, so I couldn’t quickly wash it off my arms.

Long story short, my forearms were badly burned. Covered with blisters this morning despite hours of ice followed by fresh aloe vera from my plant, when I got home.

Just another (really obscure) reason to drink green food. Instead of animal products. My green smoothies have never hurt me.

That said, you haven’t been “initiated” as a GSG until you’ve had a blenderful blow up. (Has this happened to you yet? You can find dried green blobs even months later–ceiling, cabinets, all kinds of fun places.)

Important tip: press the lid on, very well, all the way around!

I found the coolest muscle stim / massage gadget

Facebook Twitter Linkedin Digg Delicious Reddit Stumbleupon Tumblr Posterous Email

Stress after work, stiff neck, joint pain, sore feet, cramping legs, back pain, achy shoulders? You will love this!

When I went to Expo West in Anaheim recently, I saw 1,900 booths in 3 days! It’s like a trade-show marathon, that place! You could eat all kinds of “organic” and “natural” junk food. At the end of the day, though, it’s just junk food. If gummy bears are a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being healthy), organic gummy bears are a 1.5!

I found just a handful of products that I think would actually enhance your lifestyle. Only a few nutrition products competing in the “health food” space are worth your money.

But O. M. G. There was one booth I just didn’t want to leave. It’s this Korean company with this incredibly affordable product that combines Chinese acupuncture with deep tissue massage sensations to relieve pain. The little hand-held controller has wide variability on strength, in the re-usable stimulation pads that you can use anywhere on your body. It sends bio-electrical signals directly to the muscle to relieve pain and stress.

No meds, no side effects. I sat in a chair and put the electrodes on my shoulder blades—then on my feet—
Unbelievable! Every bit as good as the electrical stim you get at the physical therapists’ office. The result was as good as a massage.

I couldn’t believe the price they let me get them for. They sell the Massage XP III that I fell in love with, for $250 ON SALE. But I signed a paper that I would never sell for less than $139, so that’s what I’m doing in the store for a limited time. Plus I’m throwing in a set of the large pads (great for large muscles like the back of your shoulders) for FREE.
I bought 50 and had them shipped. So be one of the first 50 to grab them in my store and ENJOY! You will love this! Take it to work and let your co-workers enjoy it:
