Thanks Bay Area friends!

Dr. Lauren Clum and Dr. Mariza Snyder in Oakland put on a lovely event last Friday. Thanks for the lunch for everyone who came. (I didn’t get to eat it, but I heard good things about it!)

I am so jealous of Californians with all their access to produce and whole-foods markets (lowercase and uppercase)! One of the best places in the world to be “raw!”

If this doesn’t motivate you, I don’t know what will

So I taught my second class in a week at Dr. Christopher’s in Springville last night.

Seems like someone always comes up after a class with a phenomenal story of what happens when you undertake the whole-foods habits I teach. Patricia and Steve Terry (with me below) were the last in line to ask questions and sign their book.

Patricia’s daughter Tricia and other family members were summoned, from out of town, to say goodbye to Patricia’s 89-year old mother. I’m told Grandma was bedridden and dying. Tricia put her on lots of green smoothies and after two weeks, Grandma was not only out of bed, but also mobile, walking on the treadmill, and saying, “I feel like I could run a mile!”

The family was astonished. So Steve, a cardiac patient, was impressed. He got my book The Green Smoothies Diet. He began the habit himself after blood tests on 5/14/2010. He was waving his test results–turns out he brought me my own copy! His triglycerides were a whopping 389, far more than double the top of the normal range. His blood pressure was 160/110, yikes!

He was excited to tell me that at his blood draw less than 2 months later, he’d lost 30 lbs. The chart he brought from his doctor shows triglycerides at 153, a reduction of over 60%, and blood pressure well into the normal range at 109/81!

I love hearing these stories. Steve and Patricia then catalogued for me all the people in their lives to whom they are enthusiastically endorsing whole foods habits starting with a daily quart of green smoothie.

I love these stories! They are my air and water. They make my day and keep me keepin’ on with this mission. Thanks to everyone who attended and everyone who shares this information with others. Please send the link to this story to someone you know struggling with heart disease.

Don’t make people eat kale. They might hurt you.

So my class at Runner’s Corner in Orem last night was late at night, but awesome! This is me with Kris, my volunteer, who told me she was going to beat me up if I made her eat any more kale. Either that or she is showing off her Popeye-like muscles. Maybe she was showing that gorillas, who eat mostly greens, are very strong?

I’m not sure which. I forget what happened.

I’m not making it up, what she said, though. I just can’t remember what was happening in that precise photo. At one point, while what I instructed her to eat, she said, “I hate you.”

At another point, I thought she was done eating what I gave her, and congratulated her. She hung her head and dug the kale and chard stems out of her pocket like a kid who got busted. If you don’t believe me on any of this, ask anyone who was there. Gotta love people who are honest! She got a big round of applause.

One reader came from Phoenix with a pent-up boatload of questions! It was very late, and I’d run out of 12 Steps kits, so I had her follow me home because I knew I had one there and she was . . . yeah, like I said, from out of town.

She said, “I can’t wait to tell my friends that I was in GreenSmoothieGirl’s messy garage! I texted them on the way over here!” Okay, she didn’t really say the part about my garage—she said something much nicer than that. But I’m just sayin. My garage . . . sigh. It’s not perfect.

Another reader brought me apricots from her tree. Yum, thank you! I am about to use them making a couple blenderfuls of GS to take to Park City for the weekend. For girls’ back-to-school shopping, an August tradition with my friend Wendy and our daughters. She planned the food and said, “You bring the GS!” I’m on it, headed out to the garden now.

In your 60’s looking like this!

So here are a few photos from my class last night in Springville. Thanks to volunteer Bob, who was a trouper showing us how long it takes, and how unpleasant it is, to chew up a couple stalks of kale and chard. That’s about 25% of what you get in a quart of green smoothie daily. (If you are chewing chard and kale, don’t let me dissuade you. I just like to talk about what happens when you break down the cell walls of your greens, making nutrition instantly available and so easy to eat without drowning it in gobs of salad dressing.)

Check out 12 Steps to Whole Foods followers (and sisters) Carolyn (left), age 61, and Kathleen (right), age 65. They have beautiful skin and they look 15 years younger than they are! They came up and said something to this effect about my program:

“Please tell people this works! Especially against the nasty effects of menopause. If people only knew what eating whole foods would do for them, they would all do it.”

Carolyn was run over by a forklift and severely injured 15 years ago. Changing her lifestyle, she is off all meds. And Kathleen has balanced her hormones by eating plant food.

Independence Day, part 2 of 2

So I told you my dad is the most rad dude ever. He is unfailingly positive. In fact, if you’re grumpy, he just gets MORE peppy and smiley. He epitomizes the idea that work is a blessing, because he embraces hard work.

Forgive me if I’ve told this story before. As a teenager, my dad sprayed his grandfather’s cherry orchards in the summers, in Santaquin, Utah. Back then they didn’t even wear masks! And they were spraying Malathion, a pesticide so carcinogenic, so deadly that the U.S. banned it many years ago. Dad told me a story once of turning, as he was spraying, and getting sprayed full in the face accidentally by his brother Ron—into his mouth and eyes, even—with those deadly, now-illegal chemicals.

So why doesn’t my dad have cancer? Instead he’s a 67-year old runner (even if I kicked his trash last Monday in a race) enjoying retirement. No knee issues.

For that matter, I am fairskinned and have basically refused to stay out of the sun (because of tennis/running) since I was young. From 16-20, I sunbathed in a bikini almost daily, from April to October every year. I’d burn and burn and burn, until I finally tanned. So why have I never had any skin cancer?

The answer to both questions, I think, is LIFESTYLE. My dad eats mostly plant foods. My parents’ diet isn’t as stellar as it was when I was young. But they eat little animal protein and processed food. They eat homemade kefir and drink alkaline water.

With massive raw plant food in the diet, you are mopping up free radicals instead of letting them grow into cancer.

Remember in The China Study (Oxford/Cornell), all of the mice and rats were injected with aflatoxin, a very carcinogenic compound (mold). But only the rodents fed a 20% animal protein diet actually developed cancer. Those fed a very low animal-protein diet (5%) were lively and healthy past their prime. Enzymes, vitamins, minerals—found abundantly in raw greens, vegetables, fruits, sprouts—prevent cancer from growing.

So my dad had off-the-charts Malathion exposure, and I had 100+ sunburns before age 20. This is very similar to the animals’ carcinogen exposure in the Oxford-Cornell project. Carcinogens can be neutralized effectively if the body’s natural weapons are in place.  You must FEED your body’s natural defenses, not burn them out.

Eat plants. It helps the earth, since your consumption of resources is 1/20th what a meat eater’s is. But if you know someone with cancer, you know that disease is hell on earth. And eating plants is your best cancer prevention.

(p.s. How much is 5% of your diet? As an example, for me, since I burn 1600 calories per day without exercise, that’s 80 calories. 80 calories is ½ cup of low-fat yogurt or 4 oz. of fish/chicken. That’s the average for a 5’8”, 130-135 lb. woman.)

Thanks for coming in Ogden. Two new classes in Orem and Springville

The photos didn’t turn out that well, but that doesn’t diminish that we had a great class in Ogden last night. Thank you everyone for coming! See volunteer Justin in the photo below, who told us he has lost 42 lbs. doing NO exercise and just drinking green smoothies (instead of his former staple, caffeine-intense Rockstar energy drink) as my book outlines.

He says he’ll never go back and feels a million times better. He’s writing his story up and I’ll post it here later.

The Springville class on Aug. 4 is FULL. Therefore, I thought the Ogden/Springville classes would be the last of the summer, but we are adding two more.

Teaching about green in beautiful green Spanish Fork

Hey, thanks to everyone who came to Spanish Fork for my very recent class, photos below. I met a retired fashion photographer from Paris who was diagnosed with a fatal cardiovascular disease and is correcting it with diet, traveling through the U.S. and looking for answers. My editor came—she’s spend hundreds of hours editing my books and recipe collections but finally got her first green smoothie. My friends Denley and Jan, founders of SunWarrior, who I’m traveling with to New York this weekend. A college student trying to address bipolar disorder without drugs. A Roxberry smoothie shop franchisee that wants to be a GreenSmoothieGirl franchisee too. A single mom of 11 kids. And of course the lovely and gracious Aven, owner of Beehive Health Essentials.

I love meeting interesting new friends at my classes. Thanks for honoring me with your time. I hope you get something of value in the time we spend together.
