THE BEST BLENDER

Only two blenders on the market are worth your money: VitaMix and BlendTec.  I own both power blenders, so which is the best blender?  I use my BlendTec and VitaMix 3-5 times a day.  I think that qualifies me for a new nickname, like maybe blendergirl?  I hate to even call it a blender, because these machines are so much more: they grind wheat or flax seed or coffee, they make perfect soups without a stove, they crush ice, juice, and make ice cream (nutritious, GreenSmoothieGirl ice cream, of course).

I’ll leave any other competition out of the comparison, because these two big guys, VitaMix and BlendTec, are the best.  (I also own a Bosch blender and some others, and they don’t even belong in the comparison.)

So here’s what I think—my review of the pros and cons of both machines:

1.BlendTec’s motor has higher horsepower, and I’m a sucker for faster/bigger/better. However, VitaMix’s motor is fantastic too.

2.BlendTec is the smarter machine, with 17 settings for what you want to do—for instance, green smoothies! The smoothie setting alternates high and low to pull greens down into the “blending vortex” centrifugally during the slow cycles.  That way you don’t have to muscle your greens down with a tamper that VitaMix relies on. However, some people like the tamper. I like it for really thick concoctions—raw frostings, pates made with nuts, etc.

3.BlendTec has a lifetime warranty on the blade so you don’t have to worry about it getting dull.  I never worry about something going wrong with my BlendTec—and by the way, I’ve sent my VitaMix back to the manufacturer several times, but haven’t needed to repair my BlendTec. When I do send my VitaMix in, their customer support is nothing short of brilliant. Quick, no questions asked. VitaMix has the better warranty but my research suggests you’ll NEED your warranty with BlendTec less, so it’s hard to compare on this measure.

4.BlendTec’s base and overall height is shorter and fits under standard countertops (unlike VM, which does not fit).  I take my BlendTec when I travel to hotel rooms, condos, anywhere I go, so my family’s nutrition doesn’t suffer on the road—and my BlendTec is fits in a suitcase.

5.BlendTec has the square jar design that is easier to pour from, and wider (where the VitaMix is deeper, and I have a hard time scraping stuff out of its bottom with a spatula and get stuff all over my arm).  Stuff gets stuck at the narrow part of the bottom of the VitaMix and usually goes to waste.

6.BlendTec now has a 96 oz. jar. I wish it were marked all the way to the top (impossible in manufacturing, I’m told), but it’s huge and I love it.

7.With BlendTec, you don’t have to buy a second canister to blend dry ingredients, for instance, to grind wheat. (That costs you an extra $80 with the VitaMix.)

8.BlendTec has a cool marketing campaign: check out YouTube for demos on blending a camcorder into powder, making a drink out of a whole chicken and a can of Coke including the CAN. (My vegetarian daughter is a conscientious objector to the chicken dying for no good reason, though!) VitaMix does a better job in its recipe book and marketing positioning at being nutrition oriented. (BlendTec’s recipes are unimpressive, nutritionally.)

9.BlendTec is less expensive.

10.Both companies now use a BPA-free jar.

Nobody who is serious about raw, whole-food nutrition (especially getting greens into the diet) should be without a BlendTec or VitaMix, the best blenders in the world.  Get one through my affiliate link, and I’ll include:
